Rural Networks without the Internet

I just came across this article from SciDev.Net: “Rural Internet — not online but still connected”.  I think the author presents a great overview of how rural areas are using technology:

  • The article addresses the use of digital islands, which also came up at the web4dev conference last month.  There is lots of value to connecting communities together, even when it’s not yet practical or financially sustainable to have Internet connectivity.
  • It also points out the conflict between traditional computers for access to information and the reality of rural illiteracy.

These are two of the reasons why Literacy Bridge believes that audio devices designed for creating and sharing locally created knowledge is best way to empower rural poor people.
